Our Students Are Going to Mars

By the year 2030, people are expected to be living on Mars. NASA’s current Journey to Mars project focuses research, exploration, and innovation development needed to make this goal a reality. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and Space X, is working to establish a permanent, self-sustaining colony on Mars within the next 50 – 100 years. Dragon, the SpaceX free flying spacecraft, became the first commercial spacecraft to deliver cargo to the International Space Station and safely return cargo to Earth. Dragon’s next goal is to fly crew to space.

Our current students may be one of these visitors to Mars. More likely, our students will be doing work in some way related to the Mars Missions. Students will become the engineers, machinists, and welders designing, testing, and building the spacecraft and equipment. Students will be the programmers creating computer simulations to plan for and trouble shoot challenging problems. Designers will create products that are functional in a much different environment, keeping explorers comfortable and happy. Medical personnel, exercise physiologists, registered dietitians, biomedical engineers, and others will work to keep healthy and safe. Writers will keep us informed of the Mars project’s progress and successes.

The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD)  is preparing students for this exciting future by including STEM education in every grade level. STEM, or science, technology, engineering, and math, trains students to be thinkers and problem solvers.

This blog has two goals: To celebrate the STEM programs happening around the district and to make families and students aware of STEM opportunities available for students.

Listings of STEM opportunities are for information only and are not an endorsement of programs.
